Personalities

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello

This has been called “The best lecture of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello that I have ever seen!” by many of the viewing public and I am sincerely and highly honored by that praise.

Learn how these two burlesque comedians came to dominate every medium they appeared in, overcame great personal tragedies, gave away large parts of their earnings and made America laugh when the country needed it most. We certainly could use comedians and human beings like them today! From their beginnings in burlesque to their success in film and television, you will feel as if you knew these men by the end of the presentation. For this lecture, view some of their rare live television appearances on the Colgate Comedy Hour that you may never have experienced after the Power Point presentation! And you’ll laugh until your sides hurt! A large memorabilia collection (including actual World War 2 newspaper ads and magazine articles), autographs and book display will be included with this presentation. As a bonus, you will be given free leads on how to follow Bud and Lou today as their families keep their legends alive. This is one of my most popular lectures and never fails to attract large audiences.

These superstars of their day still entertain us today!

Lucille Ball

Coming from a lower middleclass background, Lucille Ball lost her Father when she was three years old and lived with various family members in upstate New York. Leaving school to learn to act and model, she was became a Goldwyn Girl and eventually a leading B actress at various Hollywood Studios. She was considered “washed up” as an actress and took radio jobs. When CBS offered to make the radio series in which she was starring into a television series, she would only consent if her Cuban born, bandleader husband could play the same role on television. And the rest, as they say, is television history! She became a powerhouse executive of her own studio and starred in three successful television series, including her role as Lucy Ricardo in the trailblazing “I Love Lucy”, which was, and still is, one of the greatest and funniest programs of all time! Learn about Lucy’s life and career in this timely and poignant lecture and then screen some of her funniest moments in the original black and white format or beautiful newly colorized editions! A memorabilia, book and autograph display is included.

See the iconic comedienne in her funniest moments.

Jack Benny

The comedian’s comedian and star of Vaudeville, film, Radio and Television, Jack Benny was loved by millions. Jack could get more laughs with silence than most comedians get with a rapid fire joke. You’ll see why with some classic Jack Benny television episodes in this original lecture. You will see him rise from his humble Orthodox beginnings to reach the height of television popularity. Was he really cheap? Was he really vain? Was he really self-centered? Was he a lousy violinist? Of course not, but he played them all so well that people thought all those personality traits were true! And that is why he was so well loved. He made fun of himself and made you laugh while he did it. An autograph, memorabilia (including rare World War 2 magazine articles) and book display is included.

Humphrey Bogart

Raised as a privileged, cultured and refined New York City boy, he endured a difficult childhood, learned drama from the ground up, married multiple times and played gangster roles that were the complete opposite of his real personality. An unlikely leading man, he was one of the greatest talents to grace the silver screen and remains an icon today. See why he was voted the Number One leading man of all time. After the lecture, see Bogie in a rare comedic television appearance! Autograph, memorabilia and book displays are included with this presentation.

See how this prodigy began taking piano lessons at two years of age, gave his first piano recital at age eight and performed terrified many times in his career. He overcame his fear by telling jokes and developed into not just a world class pianist but a world renown comedian as well. Learn how he tweaked Nazi noses and boarded the last American ship out of Europe to America. From playing at parties, to the radio, television and finally sold out concerts, this loveable Dane became a favorite around the world, performing into his nineties! After the lecture, enjoy some of his funniest moments and listen to his fabulous music. He was truly one of a kind.

Carol Burnett - Timeless Comedienne

This is the original Long Island Power Point presentation on the Queen of Variety! Despite coming from an unbelievably poor and difficult beginning, Carol Burnett has risen to the heights of television fame. Along the way, she received a few breaks but mainly succeeded due to her unfailing positive attitude and her faith in her own abilities. She eventually succeeded on Broadway and in television specials before breaking television barriers by hosting a comedy / variety show for eleven years on prime time network television - a feat that no female has accomplished before or since. Working with an unbeatable supporting cast, she has become a television and comedy legend. With this presentation, you will learn about her start in television, Broadway successes, her loss of a child and her film career in this comprehensive telling of her life. Some of her funniest television moments will be screened with this presentation. Her sketch “Went with the Wind” has been called the “funniest sketch ever performed on television” and you will see why. An autograph, memorabilia and book display is included.

A television mainstay for over fifty years!

The Dead End Kids, The Little Tough Guys, The East Side Kids and The Bowery Boys

The original Long Island lecture on our favorite delinquents. Known by all the above names, see how Hollywood’s bad boys acted with such stars as James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and Ronald Reagan before getting their own long running comedy series. Learn which cast members were related and how Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall and the rest of the gang went on to make films through all their reincarnations for more than twenty years! You’ll also learn what happened to them after they left the group! This program offers a choice of films - one of their funniest Bowery Boys films “The Bowery Boys Meet The Monsters” or their classic Dead End Kids drama “Angels with Dirty Faces” , co-starring James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and Pat O’Brien, will be shown with this program. (James Cagney’s death scene in this film is one of the most memorable in film history and is open for debate as to the motives of his actions. Makes for a worthy after film discussion.) An autograph, memorabilia and book display are included.

James Cagney

The first Long Island presentation to cover the life and career of this New York City superstar! See how this poor Irish kid from New York’s lower East Side became a hoofer (dancer), one of the screen’s toughest gangsters and then one of Hollywood’s best loved stars. This presentation covers Jimmy’s life beginning from his humble start and details his amazing career. It can include film highlights or a screening of one of his greatest films, “Public Enemy”, where Jimmy exploded on the screen in his toughest and arguably meanest film role and the one that made him a star. Singing, dancing, drama or comedy - nothing was beyond his scope. Respected, loved and admired by all, except Studio Head Jack Warner, there was no one like this “Professional Againster”! An autograph, book and memorabilia display is included.

He was much more than just a tough guy!

Charles Chaplin

Learn about the world’s most famous and recognizable comedian’s rise from the depths of poverty to world wide renown with his character of “The Little Tramp”. Some of his personal tragedies could easily have been avoided, but his stamp on comedy still makes its impact today. Charlie still influences comedy today and you will experience some of “The Tramp’s” most entertaining silent work with this lecture. A large memorabilia, book and autograph display is included.

W. C. Fields

Spend an afternoon with the man, the myth and the legend. Can you laugh at a man that reportedly hated dogs and children? You’ll find that you can. And you will also discover that all of the stories that you have heard are not true and why he portrayed his likes and dislikes on the screen. He was a very complicated man and a true comic genius. With this program, you can decide if you would like a feature film presentation or some of “The Great Man’s” short films. Either way, it’s an afternoon filled with laughs! An autograph and book display are included.

A master comedian. Did he really hate children?

Forgotten Comedians of Early Comedy

This presentation is the first on Long Island to cover these very funny comedians. Spend an afternoon with forgotten comics of yesteryear with a combination of both silent and sound short films. You will see the messy antics and unbelievable stunts of the silent clown Larry Semon. This man rivaled both Chaplin and Lloyd at the box office in the early 1920’s. Then we see the fourth giant of silent comedy, Harry Langdon, who was briefly compared to Chaplin and Lloyd, perform two versions of his famous man-child character in his funniest sound short made at the Hal Roach studio. Third up is the wildest comedy team specializing in anarchy in the short film format - Bobby Clark and Paul McCullough. The last of the headliners is the great Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle in an ultra rare sound short made for Vitaphone in Brooklyn! He was an international star when a scandal ruined his career. You will learn the back story of each of these comedians, how most of them had a very sad finish to their lives and screen careers and why they are forgotten today. But once you watch them, you will remember the laughs for a long time. As a special bonus, there will be a rare sound short made by Warner Brothers in 1935 starring four of the silent screen’s most famous supporting comedians with the pie fight to end all pie fights! Guaranteed to make you laugh! The first lecture on Long Island to cover these comedians! An autograph and book display is included.

Funny Men

This is a fast moving program that can be presented in either a school or library setting. It is the first lecture of it’s kind designed for children to become familiar with some of the early giants of film comedy, as well as providing some touches of history and geography. This lecture includes a short biography of the stars and is extremely interactive. Hilarious Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy film clips are shown and the children will become familiar with both silent and early sound comedy. Each segment includes positive life lessons with an obstacle of what each star had to overcome to achieve success. Other points involve teamwork and respecting one another. The children are highly encouraged to ask questions throughout the experience. Although designed as a learning and entertainment experience, parents and teachers will enjoy the films as well as there is nothing like experiencing comedy in a group setting! This program can be edited to fit your programming needs.

Jackie Gleason and “The Honeymooners”

Often requested, Jackie Gleason has now been added to my list of available lecture topics. The “biggest thing on television” was born and raised in Brooklyn and overcame a great deal in his life - the early death of his older brother, abandoned by his Father and partly responsible (due to a tragic mistake) for the death of his Mother, Jackie had a difficult life. Determined to succeed, he appeared in cheap clubs, films and early television before making the series for which he is forever known - “The Honeymooners”. Besides Jackie, you will meet his talented cast members, learn the history of the show, see some rare behind the scenes photographs and, following the presentation, see two “Lost Honeymooners” episodes - “The Hot Dog Stand” and “The Adoption”. This presentation provides many laughs and even a few tears (in “The Adoption”) as you will see Ralph Kramden have some serious and heart wrenching moments. The content is similar to the “Holiday’s with the Honeymooners” program listed below but contains two completely different “Lost Honeymooners” segments that can be enjoyed the year round. No sooner was this program listed and it immediately booked by various parties. Don’t miss out on an entertaining afternoon or evening with this topic! This presentation also includes a book, autograph and rare memorabilia display.

And away we go!

Benny Hill

The first Long Island lecture to discuss the legendary Benny Hill! The saucy and world famous English comedian that we remember from television began as a shy man with a stage act that needed much work. Afraid of hostile audiences, he turned to television and eventually became a world famous clown who was loved by millions. But what was he like when not entertaining? Who was that little Irish fellow that had his head repeatedly tapped by Benny? Did Benny ever marry? Did he spend his fortune on extravagances? Why was his immensely popular show cancelled? Find out in this presentation and then watch some of his most hilarious sketches while you laugh yourself silly! He was an expert at all types of comedy - farce, physical, verbal and puns and the crowd response to this presentation shows that he still entertains today! Benny Hill music, an autograph collection and memorabilia and book display are included in this study of the world’s most famous modern clown.

The man himself!

The man himself!

Buster Keaton

An innovative, independent and a dedicated workhorse, Buster Keaton is one of the three giants of silent comedy (along with Charles Chaplin and Harold Lloyd) and is an icon in the world of comedy. Learn about his triumphs and the tragedies that lead to his fall with the advent of sound. And it was not his voice that wrecked his sound career, but his personal life coupled with drinking and a very bad business decision! Despite that, he continued to work in film and television until his death. Some of Buster’s best silent shorts will be screened with this lecture and they are still amazing to this day! An autograph, memorabilia and book display is included.

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy

The world’s most famous comedy team will be covered from their humble beginnings, to their teaming on screen and later, the sad end to their prolific careers and their final tours of the British Isles. This is the comedy team that all other teams aspire to be! You may be surprised to learn who was the driving force behind their on screen magic. You will learn about their lives and careers and, as I am co-Sheik (President) of the Long Island Chapter of the “Sons of the Desert”, you will also learn about the organization that honors them as well. Together, they made over one hundred films and in this program you will screen some of their most famous comedy short subjects and highlights and experience why they still make people laugh for almost one hundred years. A truly unique presentation with a large memorabilia (including rare World War 2 newspapers), book, Laurel and Hardy music and autograph display to enhance your experience. This program continues to draw large audiences and laughs whenever it is presented.

They are the world’s most well known and loved comedy “Double Act”

Hal Roach’s Other Comedians

Of course, the most famous comedy team of all time made their greatest comedies on the “Lot of Fun”, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. But Hal Roach had many other gifted comedians that were making films at the same as “The Boys”. This lecture will provide an afternoon as laughs as you become acquainted with Zasu Pitts and Thelma Todd, Our Gang and Charlie Chase. All of these comedians were extremely popular and their films can still brings howls of laughter today. In addition to a history of these comedians, you will see a short subject of each comedian as an example of their comedic work. In addition, there will will a showing of a recently restored silent comedy gem that was thought to be lost until a few years ago! You will not want to miss this surprise! Get ready for an afternoon of laughs and fun! An original lecture topic with a book and autograph display included.

Harold Lloyd

The third star of silent comedy’s “Big Three”, Harold Lloyd’s box office superseded both Chaplin and Keaton, but today he is the least known of the three because he owned his films and allowed very few re-releases in his lifetime. His comedy was that of the “Everyman” and his “Glasses” character proved that comedy could be relatable and still be uproariously funny. This is the man that invented the “romantic comedy” and was the first man in film history to portray a normal looking comic figure! Unfairly called a thrill comedian today, because his comedy is much more than that. You will learn his storied background, his loss of a large portion of one hands, see his fabulous one of a kind home and enjoy one of his best feature silent comedy classics or highlights in this presentation. An autograph, memorabilia and book display is included.

Amazing stunts that thrill to this day!

Martin and Lewis - The 1950’s hottest comedy team

After many requests from the public, Martin and Lewis is now available for viewing. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were the hottest property around in 1956 when they broke up and, according to Lewis, left $500 million in contracts on the table. What drove this extremely smooth singing straight man and his wild comedic partner to break up the act? With this lecture, you will learn of the “Boys” personal background as well as their colliding egos that lead to the team ending their partnership exactly ten years to the day after it began. Hollywood stars begged them not to breakup, studio executives screamed and the public cried but they wouldn’t even talk to one another for twenty years - or would they? You’ll be surprised as to what lead to the split as well as their careers as solo artists. A complicated relationship that produced sparks on the screen and 1950’s television sets. This program includes a Power Point presentation, Dean Martin music, comedic highlights from their appearances on the “Colgate Comedy Hour”, and a display that includes books, autographs and memorabilia.

Dean and Jerry were the superstars of the 1950’s.

The Marx Brothers

See how these real life brothers overcame poverty in New York City, grueling vaudeville tours, Broadway fame and became stars of radio, film and television. The world has never seen anything like THESE guys and never will again! As funny as they are on the screen they were even wilder in real life. Very different off screen, they jelled like no other brother act in history in creating mayhem and belly laughs. Groucho is still quoted and imitated today! And yes, Zeppo is included, as is the feature film, or highlights, of your choice. An autograph, book and memorabilia display is included.

The Four Marx Brothers are still unique - there will never be anyone like them!

Spike Jones

Spike Jones was an outstanding bandleader and the "master of musical mayhem". There were other "crazy" bands, but no one reached the heights of popularity and audience size that he did. Spike could take any song and, with sound effects and jazzy interpretations, turn it into a laugh riot. But he could also play wonderful music "straight". You will learn about the life of Spike and the history of his bands, with the most famous being "The City Slickers". After the Power Point presentation, you will see some of Spike's funniest television moments, listen to some of his greatest recordings and see that Spike Jones was a one of a kind talent. He overcame these obstacles to become America’s favorite clown who brought his wholesome humor to the entire world. He brought us many comedic characters and from 1954 to 1970, he brought laughter and joy into America’s homes. With this presentation, you will learn all about America’s Clown Prince of Laughter and experience some of his funniest television moments!

Just a few of Red’s many characters!

The Three Stooges

This lecture covers those lovable knuckleheads from their humble beginnings to screen stardom. Members of the longest running short film series in history, they were much more than just “low” comedians and this is proven by their continued popularity around the world today . Airplane!

After many requests, I have added “Airplane!” to my roster of presentations. See the original Long Island lecture about the little 1980 film that became a blockbuster and forever changed the way film-making approached comedy. A very influential film, you can see its stamp on other movies (think the “Naked Gun” and “Hot Shots” series) and various television shows (“The Simpsons”, “Family Guy”, “American Dad” and many others). This Power Point presentation will cover the beginnings of the Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker team from their college days to the making of this modern film classic as well as the little known film that inspired their creation. Learn about the joke that went too far even for this film! Find out how Leslie Nielsen kept the cast and crew in stitches in this, his first comedic film role. See what actor thought the film was trash, was eventually convinced to appear and then laughed harder than anyone at the premier. Full of irreverent laughs and visual gags, this remains a favorite to this day. Repeated viewings will disclose gags that you missed the first dozen times you watched it. Nothing, and no one, is sacred and it shows a lost ability for people to laugh at themselves. Either film highlights or a complete screening of the movie is available, depending on your available time. An autograph, book and film memorabilia display is included.

With real and gritty characters, white knuckle suspense, a real life monster, blood, gore and theme music that still haunts you after all these years, this is a film that looks like it was made yesterday. Experience the frightening film (or selected highlights) again after the original Long Island Power Point lecture. You will have a thrilling and exciting afternoon with this breakthrough presentation. And, please, don’t blame me if you think twice before swimming at the beach this summer! You have been warned! Original soundtrack music and a book and memorabilia display, including the original movie one sheet poster and rare lobby cards, is included.

The Kid and Pay Day

In addition to a Power Point presentation on the life and times of Charles Chaplin, you will see a screening of Charlie’s rarely seen last short subject, “Pay Day” along with his first (running time is just under one hour) feature length film, “The Kid” in this, the original Long Island presentation. In this landmark film, Charlie inserts drama and pathos in between the laughs and sets the pattern for all of his wonderful films to come. In between the laughs, you will shed a tear at this screening. Actual soundtrack music is included before the film as is a book and autograph display and other memorabilia.

King Kong

See the “Eighth Wonder of the World” in all his black and white glory and learn how the film was painstakingly filmed using stop motion animation and camera techniques that were utilized in Hollywood for the next 50 years. A giant ape, dinosaurs, the Empire State Building, the Third Avenue “L” and a screaming Far Wray make this an action classic that has never been topped. This amazing film contains one of the most iconic closing scenes (and lines) in film history! You’ll shed a tear for this monster! It is still amazing to this day. This is the first Long Island presentation to give you the backstory of this amazing film.

The Odd Couple

One of the funniest films of the 1960’s and one of the greatest television programs of all time is now available for audiences! Discover how “The Odd Couple” began as a real life situation, became a play, a memorable film and then one of the greatest television series of all time. You will also learn how the casting came about for Broadway, the film and television. Some of the potential pairings will boggle the mind! You will also learn why the setting of the television show changed after the first season. An extremely funny premise, local theater productions of the play continue until today. After the Power Point presentation, you will screen film highlights or the complete film (your choice) and one of the classic Jack Klugman / Tony Randall television shows. This program includes a memorabilia, autograph and book display.

“Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?”

The Producers

This is it. The film that is vulgar, rude, outrageous, loud, crude, disjointed and extremely funny! Experience the first film that Mel Brooks wrote and directed as it shocked many critics and audiences. No one had ever made a film like this before. Two producers discover that if they oversell shares in a Broadway show and it is a flop, they can make a million dollars. To do so, they hire the worst director, a spaced out actor to star, the worst script they can find and stage a musical that covers itself in bad taste. How can a kitschy musical about Hitler in a “romp in Berchtesgaden” be a smashing success? You will discover the hysterical back story to this wonderfully funny film that lead to a 2001 hit Broadway musical and a filmed remake in 2005. The film stars Zero Mostel (in his finest film performance), Gene Wilder (in his first co-starring role) and the outrageous Kenneth Mars (his first film role) in performances that have never been equaled! And the music will keep you humming as you leave. You have a choice of either a complete film screening or selected highlights to be shown for your audience. A film soundtrack, memorabilia, book and autograph display is included with the original Long Island presentation of this classic.

(Zero Mostel) “How could this happen? I was so careful. I picked the wrong play, the wrong director, the wrong cast. Where did I go right?”

Sherlock Jr.

Buster Keaton’s classic film celebrates it’s one hundredth anniversary in 2024! The technical tricks and camera work in this film still amaze today. And, of course, the laughs come fast and furious. After the Power Point presentation that discusses Buster’s sometimes turbulent life and career, you will discover how the phenomenal screen tricks were done and then enjoy a screening of this “short” feature film, with a running time of just forty five minutes, or select film highlights. A book, autograph and memorabilia display is included along with 1920’s music before this first and original Long Island presentation. (Your turn, S!)

Still an amazing and funny film one hundred years later!

Stan and Ollie

This lecture covers the lives of the real (as seen through the director’s eyes) Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy along with the making of the new film and the special effects used. Then sit back and enjoy a screening of the film, or highlights, that brings a heartfelt and loving, if not always accurate, depiction of “The Boys” to the screen as they make their last, grueling personal appearance tour in the British Isles. Did they really argue? Was Stan actually jealous of Ollie about his solo film? You will have to attend this presentation to find out! The finale is guaranteed to make you laugh and also bring a tear to your eye. Completely accurate or not, it is still an entertaining and loving tribute to the world’s most famous “double act”! You will learn a-lot about Stan and Ollie in this first and original Long Island presentation of the world famous comedians. A book, autograph and memorabilia display is included.

Plan 9 From Outer Space

This is the most unusual film of all my presentations. Okay, I understand that this film is not a classic by ANY means. But it is still an afternoon or evening of fun as you learn about the making of the WORST (not intentionally) film of all time and the so called “Stars” behind it. With the “Amazing Criswell” (self ordained and named), lousy dialogue, lousy acting, lousy direction, no money, no special effects budget, doubles that in no way look like their counterparts, and no talent actors (except for Bela Lugosi), see the results of Ed Wood’s Hollywood dream. Unfortunately, it was Bela Lugosi’s last film, as he passed away after shooting a few silent scenes. He wasn’t even alive to see the hilarious results! Attendees are encouraged to shout out the film’s mistakes and errors (a la Mystery Science Theater 3000) as they view this glorious “messterpiece”! Ed Wood’s epic can be viewed in a colorized version or in the original black and white. In either format, you’ll never see anything quite like it again! A book, autograph and memorabilia display is included with the first Long Island presentation to cover this fun and entertaining film!

Plan 9.jpg

This picture shows the film’s action sequence in a spaceship decorated with 1950’s office furniture and shower curtains! It must be seen to be believed.

As the Amazing Criswell asks us, “Can you prove it didn’t happen?” This is truly a one of a kind film.

Planet of the Apes

Learn how this modern Science Fiction Classic was developed and finally produced in the original Long Island presentation to discuss this film. See how the special effects were accomplished and who was originally slated to co-star in the film. Many of the original story ideas were left on the drawing board, but the talent of a great cast shines through, even under all that make-up! One of Charlton Heston’s most popular roles and an iconic Science Fiction film! The ending is unforgettable till this day.

The science fiction classic you’ll go bananas over!

Some Like It Hot

This is the original Long Island presentation of the funniest film EVER made that will provide an afternoon or evening of hot jazz, gangland slayings, impersonations, amazingly funny dialogue, crisp black and white photography and lots and lots of laughs. Marilyn Monroe was never more sexy or beautiful and Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis provide the fun in drag. This film helped to break the Hollywood infamous Hays code about decency portrayed in Hollywood films. (Notice the black line in the film poster?) Learn the back story of the many difficulties that were involved in the production. For instance, is that Marilyn Monroe in the poster below? Well, yes and no. You will have to attend to find out the explanation in the first Long Island Power Point lecture to discuss this film. Film veterans Joe E. Brown, George Raft and Pat O’Brien help to round out the cast and make this an unforgettable film with the most memorable closing line in celluloid history! This presentation includes soundtrack music, and a book, autograph and memorabilia display.

Voted the funniest film of all time. And Marilyn was never more beautiful!

The Sunshine Boys

Enjoy the original Long Island presentation of this entertaining film. Neil Simon brings a very New York and very Jewish film to the screen. Is it funny? You have to ask? In between the screamingly funny dialogue is a message of dealing with elderly relatives and two elderly partners that need to understand and forgive one another. Depicting a retired headlining vaudeville duo, Walter Matthau and George Burns were never better. Walter Matthau convincingly plays Willy Clark, an angry comedian forced into retirement when his partner decided to end the act. George Burns would win his only Academy Award by playing the retired partner, Al Lewis. This is the film that revitalized his career. Laughs abound while we discover if “The Sunshine Boys” really do still care for one another. You will also learn about the actors that were first considered for the starring roles, and for various reasons, turned down the film. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy this warm, human and honestly portrayed comedy that will make an afternoon or evening of fun for all viewers. Film highlights or a complete viewing of the film (your choice) will be shown after the presentation. A book, autograph and film memorabilia display is included with this lecture. Many requests have been made for this film that is STILL funny almost fifty years later.

Two old men fighting was never so funny!

This William Wellman directed film will show you aerial dogfights that can still send you a thrill. Learn the backstory and then view the film. Don’t blink, or you’ll miss the up and coming star Gary Cooper, who was dating sexy Clara at the time! This original Long Island presentation also includes a classic book display with period music.

The Wizard of Oz

Thrill to talking trees, a scary twister, beautiful technicolor, evil and good witches, unforgettable music, memorable characters, the wonderful wizard himself and, of course, flying monkeys! Learn the back story of how this classic was filmed and then enjoy a screening of the film or selected highlights. After the screening, learn some of the “tricks of the trade” that were used to make the greatest fantasy film of all time, how the film was cast and why the sepia toned Kansas storyline was added to the beginning and end of the film. A charming and timeless film, it still warms everyone’s heart to this day! Not to be missed! Soundtrack music accompanies a book and memorabilia display.

You Bet Your Life

Groucho Marx was a “one of a kind” film personality but by the late 1940’s his career was at a depressing standstill. The Marx Brothers were no longer making films, his own radio programs had not succeeded and his career consisted of guest appearances on other stars’ programs. In 1947, Producer John Guedel witnessed Groucho go toe to toe with Bob Hope adlibbing much of his dialogue during a guest spot on Hope’s program. Guedel thought Groucho would be wonderful using that ability on a radio program and so “You Bet Your Life” was born! The show ran for thirteen years on radio and eleven years on television and became a staple in syndication for many years. With this Power Point presentation, you will learn the answers to many questions, such as, “Did Groucho have a script”, “Were the contestants screened in advance?” and “Why was this this successful show cancelled?” After the presentation, you will view various clips from the show’s vaults, including the segment that launched a successful film career, a parody and rare outtakes. This presentation also includes an autograph, memorabilia and book display. Get ready for Groucho’s amazing wit and you may learn a few quiz facts along the way as well!

Groucho Marx at his hilarious best!

Young Frankenstein

Often requested at many venues, this hilarious homage to classic Frankenstein films is now available to the public. Co-written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder and directed by Mel Brooks, this film is as funny and fresh today as when we laughed at it in 1974! This Power Point presentation will take you from the early development of the film to its completion. Along the way, you will discover the unconventional way the film was cast, how Mel and Gene wrote the story and screenplay, why it was filmed in black and white, the scene that almost caused a huge fight between the authors and the many behind the scenes stories and crackups. After the presentation, you can experience either a screening of the entire film or selected highlights. This was the favorite of film of Gene Wilder and Mel considers it his finest work. Attendees will listen to the film’s soundtrack as they view a memorabilia, book and autograph display before the program.

The 1974 comedy classic! is still hilarious!

Patriotic Program

Yankee Doodle Dandy

Perhaps the most rousing patriotic musical ever filmed, see this classic flag waver that stars James Cagney as George M. Cohan, Broadway’s most popular and versatile star. Learn how Cagney came to star in this film and watch him excel at his first love - dance. Jim always thought of himself as a “hoofer” and he displays his amazing talent in this film. Filled with wonderful toe tapping songs, funny jokes, a sterling cast and Jimmy Cagney’s magnetism, this film remains a captivating and absolute delight to this day! Soundtrack music as well as a book, autograph and memorabilia display are included with the original local Long Island presentation.

Holiday Films and Programs

Memories of a 1960’s Christmas

Do you remember growing up with fond memories of heart warming Christmas programs? These black and white shows gave a message of holiday hope and happiness unlike anything on television today. This original presentation lets you relive those feelings of good cheer with some rarely seen popular shows of yesteryear. Leading off is Art Carney in a seldom seen “Twilight Zone” episode. Carney performs a heartbreaking portrayal of a down on his luck department store Santa that just might stumble across some magical gift giving to those in need. A rare positive and ultimately feel good Twilight Zone program. The second program presents singing, dancing and jokes from the very talented cast of the “Dick Van Dyke Show” as the cast members put on their own Christmas program. The third program is a very special episode of “The Andy Griffith Show” as Andy brings the Christmas spirit to Mayberry’s Scrooge. This is the only episode that had Christmas as a subject, but you can see why Griffith stopped while he was ahead. Guaranteed to bring a tear to your eye , this can be presented in the original black and white or a new colorized version! An expanded version of this program can feature the long lost “I Love Lucy” Christmas episode that was never part of the syndication run. While not made in the 1960’s, you can’t go wrong with Lucy and the gang to bring holiday laughs! Lucy can be presented in either it’s original black and white or a new colorized format. Classic Christmas music, memorabilia, autographs and a book display will accompany this program.

A 1990’s laugh out loud Christmas

Sit back and enjoy some of the funniest 1990’s Christmas episodes ever broadcast. First is the Solomon family’s first experience with Christmas as they try to deal with all the excitement and pressure of the holiday season from “Third Rock from the Sun”. These aliens approach Christmas with joy and wonder but their experience is a lesson for us all. “Everybody Loves Raymond” makes the next entry in “The Toaster”. See how Raymond‘s perfect Christmas gift is accidentally returned by his parents and watch the fun as they try to retrieve it. This episode is one everyone can relate to. We travel across the pond for the final segment and visit Rowan Atkinson in “Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean”. With his unique blend of visual comedy and a distinct lack of dialogue, Mr. Bean has become world famous and you will see why this child in a man’s body is so funny.

Two old friends - A Charlie Brown Christmas and How The Grinch Stole Christmas

This lecture is the first on Long Island to discuss these two classic holiday animated specials. As of the writing of this description, both specials are no longer on “Free television” and are difficult to find on “Pay television”. With this presentation, you will learn the background of the making of both of these animated specials and then you will enjoy a screening of both! “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” will still warm your heart as they did when first broadcast in the mid 1960’s. This presentation includes a book, memorabilia and autograph display. And if time permits, some rare vintage Christmas cartoons will also be included.

Hard to see these classic today - except for this presentation!

This interactive Power Point Presentation takes you behind the scenes in the making of the film, short biographies of the stars, filming locations, Ralphie's house used in the film, lost scenes and even locations that you can visit today! This presentation includes a viewing of this modern Christmas classic with holiday music of the era and a memorabilia display of authentic film items, books, ads, autographs and includes the most horrible soap ever made to wash out a kid’s mouth! (Christmas) Holidays with the Comedians

This is the original compilation of non-denominational holiday comedy performed by classic comedians! Enjoy a nostalgic and fun filled holiday program with seasonal comedy clips that are sure to please. A short Power Point discussion proceeds each segment. Watch Laurel and Hardy try to sell Christmas trees in their silent reciprocal destruction classic “Big Business”. Abbott and Costello sketches from their 1952 colorized classic Colgate Comedy Hour Christmas Show are up next and complete the program as Jack Benny goes Christmas shopping and drives Mel Blanc, and everyone else, crazy. 1940’s holiday music accompanies the book, autograph and memorabilia display that comes with this program. This is one of my most popular events and brings a new meaning to the term “holiday cheer” as everyone exits laughing.
